High Lodge is a beautifully restored 18th century gamekeepers cottage on Galloway House Estate. It is set amid a listed landscape which is organically farmed by the McCreath family. In front of the cottage the fields roll down to the sea with the Galloway hills in the distance, not another house in sight.
This ecological self catering lodge is not on the national grid and is powered by wind and sun. There is a small windmill and solar panels on the roof charging batteries which supply the electricity. This is an unusual place, for the adventurous and the unconventional. There are no mod cons and no TV - it is not a place for a hair-dryer. It is cosy, quirky and wonderfully special.
There is one attic bedroom reached by a loft ladder (some nimbleness required), a cosy den with the double bed tucked under the beams. The sitting room has spectacular views, a real fire and a sofa bed. In the very unfitted kitchen the oil fired Ray-burn makes it cosy and inviting. The bathroom has a free-standing bath and a view of the orchard to the back of the cottage. All linen and towels are provided.
It is great place for the free spirited: a perfect home to venture out on coastal and hill walks, play golf next to the sea, or fish. We also have excellent mountain biking routes nearby and tennis courts in the village. It is 5 minutes walk through the fields to a safe sandy beach and 10 minutes drive to Wigtown - Scotland's Book Town with 17 second hand bookshops and an annual literary festival
